EMERALD BAY RESIDENCE
Perched atop a dramatic hillside overlooking the sea, this structure shares an intimate relationship with the forces of nature acting upon it. A thin, butterfly roof bends upward in apparent response to the ocean breeze, while travertine walls act contrapuntally to anchor
the structure to the site.
The residence is entered discreetly by descending into a subterranean courtyard. Cantilevered, stone stairs lead to a wood bridge suspended above a reflecting pond, providing access to the residence. This layered, spatial sequence of mystery and discovery, enhances the sense of arrival. On the ocean facing side of the residence, the interior spaces are arranged in a “C” shape, around
a central courtyard with a pool and a covered outdoor space. The extended wings of the “C” provide privacy, while also framing views.
The open plan, interior spatial configuration responds to the owner’s desire for flexibility and transformation, as the structure is principally a home for the owner to engage with family and friends. A second skin of adjustable, electronically controlled exterior shutters orchestrate light and privacy. A three-story light well containing the principal interior staircase, provides spatial continuity.
The interplay of light, materials and composition contribute to a sense of place rooted in the site. Indoor and outdoor living is orchestrated by balancing views with privacy, communal space with intimacy.
QUOTE
“Simplicity and restraint were the guiding principles of this design for a hillside residence positioned at the poetic edge where land meets sea”
