OBAGI HOME
A vacation home for many years, for a large extended family, the existing beach cottage built on this oceanfront site in 1942 was in dire need of a renovation. Years of exposure to coastal conditions had led to a severe deterioration of the structure, and the surrounding landscape.
The owner’s brief was to modernize the exterior materials, and interior spaces, while still paying homage to the history of the site and structure, and the tapestry of memories enjoyed by their family and friends over the years.
The open plan, interior spatial configuration responds to the owner’s desire for flexibility and transformation, as the structure is principally a vacation home for family and friends. Traditional means of enclosure such as walls and doors are replaced with sliding panels. Interior spaces are connected seamlessly to exterior spaces by pocket doors and a continuity of materials. Travertine, mahogany and Rhine-zinc, gently woven into the composition, root the structure in the seaside terrain and provide spatial synthesis. The openness of the interior spatial plan invites the magnificent play of light upon these surfaces.
