LIANE LANE
The undertaking revolved around the transformation and expansion of an existing mid-century modern residence from the 1960s, nestled on a hillside estate overlooking the picturesque expanse of Orange County, California. While the pre-existing structure seemed well-suited for the primary needs of the owners in terms of sleeping and living spaces, there was a distinct requirement for added room to host and entertain family and friends.

The design approach delves into the intricate relationships between form and materiality, with a particular emphasis on contrapuntal dynamics. The new entertainment space takes the form of a suspended steel and glass box, seemingly weightless above the grounded base of the original single-level structure. Notably, a dominant silver travertine slab skin was introduced, reinforcing the substantial presence of the existing structure. This intentional juxtaposition serves to elucidate the intersection between the novel architectural elements and the established framework, creating a harmonious blend of contemporary and mid-century aesthetics.
