HOTEL 741

This project entailed the renovation of a historic structure in the downtown center of Laguna Beach, California. Over one hundred years of age, the structure was originally a residence, then a market, and ultimately became a small, 13 room hotel during WWll.
Prior to the renovation, the building remained relatively unchanged for over 80 years.

The 13 rooms are arranged around a central courtyard, secluded and private from the adjacent highway. The courtyard is covered by a canopy of adjustable louvers, modulating sunlight and privacy. Reclaimed wood siding, Corten steel and a series of living green walls, become the connective tissue between this building’s historic past and present aspirations.

The interplay of light, materials and composition provide a distinctive sense of place. Each room explores the intimate spaces required by a particular guest, while simultaneous drawing connections to broader landscapes and contexts. The principal
intension is harmoniously adapting to the surrounding landscape while also embracing the seaside lifestyle.
