BRENTWOOD
This project entailed the transformation of a classical, Italian Villa into a minimal, modernist residence. The owners are a young couple with small children. He is a film producer, and she is an art collector. Together they shared a desire for a residence that would integrate interior and exterior living, spaces designed for private relaxation, as well as communal space to entertain family and friends.
Upon arriving at the site, the residence is seen through the filtered frame of the mature Ficus trees lining the streets of this well- established neighborhood. A stone wall, extending out toward the street, presents a dramatic sense of arrival and invitation to enter. The previous red tile roof has been replaced with a diaphanous box, balancing gently upon the stone wall below. A sculptural, elliptical staircase within a three - level, open space volume, provides spatial continuity.
The backyard provides a variety of spatial experiences. The “L” shaped plan is organized around a pool and associated terraces. A detached Guest Suite is connected to the main residence by a covered exterior space. Adjustable, metal louvers above this space, orchestrate the play of light and shadow. An expansive herb garden, composed of elevated, reclaimed wood pedestals, provides the family with an opportunity for sustainable living, growing and enjoying their own food.
